Your EFT application can fail for different reasons depending on how you submitted it. In the United States, the portal often verifies your bank details in real time. In other countries, or when the portal asks for a bank letter, our team reviews your supporting document.
If your application status is Invalid or Declined, use the guidance below.
Automated verification could not connect your account
For US nonprofits using the Connect Bank Account form:
- Your routing number or account number may be incorrect, incomplete, or in the wrong format
- Your organization's legal name may not match the name on the bank account
- The account may not be open or able to receive funds
- Verification may be temporarily unavailable (try again later)
On the first failure, correct the details shown on screen and select Connect Account again. If verification still cannot confirm your account, upload a supporting document and select Upload bank letter.
If the portal says your organization name does not match the bank's records, confirm the legal name on your bank account and try again with the exact name your bank uses.
Manual review: account name mismatch
The account name on the form and/or the supporting document does not match the name on your nonprofit profile.
Benevity can only disburse funds to a bank account that has the same name as what is listed on your profile. If there is a discrepancy (for example, a school submitting bank details for a school district), the supporting document must include a letter explaining the difference and confirming that the account can receive funds on behalf of your organization.
This letter should be:
- Issued by your bank, or
- Signed by your organization's board
Manual review: form information does not match the supporting document
The details entered in the application form must exactly match the information in the supporting document.
One of the most common reasons for rejection is a minor error in the account number or other details typed into the form. Double-check all information before you submit.
Manual review: missing or invalid supporting document
Your supporting document must include all required information and meet the following criteria:
- It must be issued by your bank (for example, a bank letter or void check)
- It cannot be an editable or handwritten document
- The document format must be PDF, JPG, JPEG, or PNG
- If any required details are missing, your application may be declined
For US applications, bank statements and payroll or direct deposit forms are not accepted. Check what documents are accepted for US applications before you upload.
Bank account is in a non-local currency
We can only process disbursements to a bank account in your country's local currency. For example, if your organization is based in the UK, you must provide a GBP bank account. A USD account would not be accepted.
What should I do next?
Review the reasons above, correct any issues, and log in to the Benevity Causes Portal to submit again. For US nonprofits, see how to sign up for EFT. If your country uses document upload, find the banking information for your country before you resubmit.
